On Friday, September 8th, the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP) dedicated the newly completed “Better Together” mural found at the corner of Broadway and South Front Streets in Milton, Pennsylvania.
FCFP funded this project as a part of their First Focus initiative. Through First Focus, FCFP invites the community to join forces with them around a key issue. This initiative helps clarify their own efforts— and encourages all to advocate for positive change. The change FCFP is currently focusing on is to address and take meaningful action against systemic racism following a national surge of racist events.
The mural project was coordinated by Lynn Estomin, Andrea McDonough, and Becka Warfel. It was designed by artist, Sara Bordner, a Milton native, of Paint by S: www.paintbys.com. The design itself is based on the Maya Angelou quote, “Better Together.” It was created with a paint-by-number technique, with a light impression of the colors and then painted over top. It is 30 feet long and made up of 14 panels.
The mural is located on the Uptown Dwellings building, owned and managed by Benjamin Lang and Kayla Forcheskie. This project was brought to life by several businesses, organizations and nearly fifty community volunteers, including: Charlie’s Corner, DIG Furniture Bank, Lycoming-Tri-County NAACP, Milton YMCA Summer Camp, Salamander Wellness Yoga Studio, The Women’s Club of Milton, as well as several K-12 students from Danville, Milton, Lewisburg and Williamsport school districts who helped with the painting.
This is the second local mural FCFP has funded in the last few years, the first being “Only Love Can Do That” which was dedicated in 2021 and can be found on the southern side of the Firetree Place Community Center at 600 Campbell Street, Williamsport.
